Video > Cardinal

(2010)
Often older folks are represented and valued only in relation to history, where their present disappears or remains incidental. I (we) hoped to document the spaces in between—away from war stories and family outings, in order to examine a certain daily-ness and presence.

Cardinal is a short collaborative portrait that looks at age, order and time through the everyday, tender gestures of preparation, quotidian tasks and activities. Their, our and my attempts at representation and their daily rhythms expose a delicate balance of order, love and uncertainty.

Cardinal numbers denote a quantity but not an order. Cardinal as adjective poses great importance, just as the cardinal that visits my grandfather’s window signals the time as well as the seasons.
